Shop of the Week: Yarn Coture

Exquisitely knitted creations take center stage in YarnCoture. The shop is filled with amazing pieces that will have you looking forward to weather cold enough to wear them!
Owner Maryum Karim says, “I try to offer a wide variety of designs to appeal to a broad spectrum of buyers. I love to create custom designs as well as OOAK (one-of-a-kind) items in order to provide a personal shopping experience for my customers. Every item is made with great care and will not bear the Yarncoture name until I feel that it’s just right. I am constantly educating myself on new knitting and crocheting techniques to improve my craft. ”

In addition to scarves, shawls, and fingerless gloves, Maryum also offers vintage inspired designs. “My favorite pieces that I make are my Vintage Inspired Ascot neckties… I just love the simplicity of the design! ”

Maryum admits that inspirations for her stylish creations come from everywhere. “I can have a dream about a design and then wake up and create it that same day. On the other hand, a set of beautiful vintage buttons or really funky novelty yarn may inspire me to make something new. A medley of my vintage patterns collection or just a simple knit or crochet pattern coupled with my special touch will sometimes do the trick. It all depends on what mood I’m in!”

A self-taught knitter, Maryum’s passion for her craft is another source of inspiration. “there’s always a new technique, stitch pattern, a new yarn fiber, or design to try or learn. I love the way the yarn feels as it glides off my knitting needles or how quickly I can crochet a beautiful flower. I also love the fact that I have been teaching my 2 daughters to knit and crochet, and have even featured some of their finished pieces in my shop! Being able to pass these ancient crafts down to my daughers has truly been a joy! ”

Maryum admits that its sometimes difficult to balance all the areas of her busy life, so her favorite twitter trick is using her shop Facebook Page to update twitter as well. ” I love to tweet, however lately I have been swamped preparing for an upcoming craft show as well as custom orders. Tweeting through my Facebook fan page saves me a lot of time and enables me to allow my fans as well as fellow “Twitteroos” to sneak a first peek at new items in my shop. I usually tweet about my day and sometimes ask fellow Twitterers about theirs. Watching what others are saying also helps me to get a feel for my audience and what a potential buyer may be looking for. ”

YarnCoture offers unique gift ideas for everyone on your gift list, including great accessories for those hard-to buy-for men on your list, and ships both domestic and international.

Free standard worldwide shipping for every item in my shop. This special offer will be available through December. Priority Mail and Express mail services will be available for an additional charge.

Shop of the Week: In My Head Studios

34-year-old artist Vickie Porter, owner of InMyHeadStudios, has a passion for paper. “I love everything about paper-the way it feels, the sounds it makes, the colors and textures. It has dimension, and I try to use that in my work.”

A self-professed perfectionist with an eye for detail, Vickie’s exquisitely crafted pendants create miniature spaces that call to mind old letters, or the box of special treasures you had as a child.
Says Vickie, ” I have to make art like I have to breathe! I intentionally keep a messy desk so I can be inspired by the play of papers together. I have WAY more ideas for art than time to do it in!”
Using scrabble tiles and upcycled vintage dominos as the base for her pendants allows Vickie to “create something new from something old” and the addition of beads, dangles and charms give the beautiful pieces texture and movement.
An avid Twitterite, Vickie uses her three Twitter accounts not only to “connect and form relationships with people. I talk to them, post useful links, and funny stuff” but also to “share my creative process so people get to know my craft as well as me. I strive to have people think of my work when they think of me.”
In addition to working fulltime as an artist in her home studio, Vickie is also leader of the 175-member Etsy Twitter Team. “Running the team is truly a joy and a blessing to be part of! The members have created such a close community-I’m really proud of that.” Recently, she made the decision to help start up and run the Facebook Fans of Etsy Street Team (FFEST) with several other women. “They are all very talented and I am really excited about this new venture!”
InMyHeadStudios is happy to do custom pendants. “If you dream it, I can do it!” and ships jewelry all over the world. ” I guarantee you will love wearing your pendant as much as I enjoyed creating it!”

Shop of the Week: Safiya Beauty

Everything about Nailah Safiya Blades’ shop at SafiyaBeauty.etsy.com is sumptuous. She creates natural bath and body products that merge natural and eco-friendly ingredients with luxurious indulgence. You can moisturize, polish, make suds, lather, and soak with her products.

Her shop announcement says,

“Safiya’s philosophy is to provide you with the finest, purest natural and organic products, but never at the risk of neglecting your need to feel beautiful and smell delicious. Our products contain only what is absolutely necessary to make the absolute best product for your body without sacrificing your desire to feel fantastic.”

It makes me want to check out her shop for something that will make me feel soft and pretty. I’m sure I won’t be disappointed!!

Nailah wants you to know that she works,

“very hard to make sure that my products are made with the very best ingredients I can find. I think as a culture, we pay very close attention to what we put into our bodies but not so much what we put on them, which is just as important. Because of that, all of my products are made with natural ingredients and contain no parabens, phthalates, or harsh preservatives. I also strive to provide an environmentally friendly product and go to great lengths to ensure this.

“I’m an indulgent person and I think that shows through with my products. I really enjoy creating products that will transport my consumer to their own little private spa. I love using creamy butters and skin-loving vegetable oils because they create such opulent products. I’m also slightly inspired by food! All of my bath bombs are cookies or cupcakes – I have a major sweet tooth.”

You can even see the indulgence in her products through her photos. The way the butters peak up firmly, you can tell they have a lot of body to them and will be luxuriously creamy.

Her favorite thing about her craft is:

“how the finished product makes others feel. I love watching someone try my body butters for the first time and see their eyes light up as they rub it into their skin or as they smell the scents. That’s definitely my favorite part!”

About Twitter:

“I love Twitter! I think my biggest piece of Twitter advice would be to make sure it’s not all about you. I try to ‘RT’ [retweet] others or share articles that others may find helpful. I also use Twitter to announce any specials on my shop or when I have new blog posts.”

Are you looking for the perfect gift or favor? Custom and wholesale orders are welcomed by Safiya Beauty! They offer private labeling for weddings, showers and parties.

Shop of the Week

As I’m a new inductee to the Etsy Twitter Team, which helps promote Etsy shops, part of the benefits of our team is that we promote shops in many different forums, including our personal blogs. I have to say that this is going to be pretty easy to do, because the shop we’re promoting this week is FABULOUS!  Beth’s makes hand bound books and is currently focusing on books for weddings and other special events.  They all have a beautifully elegant touch to them that I love!  The journal (image on the left) is one of my favorites from her shop, and I could see myself using one of these to write down some of my most personal thoughts (as I’m a fairly avid journaler) in one of these beautiful creations.

Here’s some of the info that was written in the Etsy Twitter Team blog:

Beth has an undergraduate degree in studio art and a Masters in Art Therapy. She has studied everything from paper arts to jewelry design, collage and pottery. She is a self-taught book artist and has been making books since around 2003.

Recently she worked with the Grammy Award winning rock band, The Fray, to create a backstage guest book for their 2009 summer tour. You can view her portfolio at flickr.com/photos/uberart.

She ships internationally and is running a sale for this week: Mention “EtsyTwitter” in the Notes to Seller section for 10% off any item in her shop (expires Sunday 8/9/09).

Follow her on Twitter @UberArt
Read her blog: uberartshop.blogspot.com

She has some incredibly beautiful books there!  Check out the one she created for the Fray and see how incredibly classy it is!  The attention to detail is amazing!  The way everything is bound, the fact that it opens flat; everything about these books is so precise, and she also does custom orders.
